Managing your money doesn't have to be difficult.

Updated: Nov 21

It's official: inflation is on the rise.

The Office for National Statistics has revealed that inflation rose 0.2% in September, up from 0.1% in August and the highest it has been since 2012.

Prices are now 9.9% higher than they were 12 months ago, and 2.4% higher than they were in August.

The main reason for this increase is the rising cost of food and fossil fuels - which have each seen sharp increases over the last year.

But what does that mean for you?

Higher grocery and fuel bills and if your wages haven't increased you will find your money won't spread as far as it did.

If you have direct debit subscriptions that you forget to cancel and are, shall we say, keen on coffee shops, of course, these are obvious ways to decrease your outgoings. Unfortunately, you will likely need to look into your spending habits closer this winter.

If you’re ready to take control of your finances, the first step is setting up a budget.

If you’ve never done this before, it might seem like a bit of a challenge. But it doesn't have to be.

Here's how to get started:

1. Write down all the money coming in each month (salary, wages, benefits, etc).

2. Write down all the money going out each month (rent/mortgage payments, bills, food shopping and other regular expenses).

3. Look at what's left over—that's your disposable income. If you need some extra cash for something fun or exciting (like a holiday), this is where you can start saving up.

4. Make sure that all of your regular expenses are paid first—before you start splashing out on any extras.

Worried about keeping track of everything?
